Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 tutoring online: Papers 2, 4 and 6, all 12 topics
This page is for students sitting Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 (or 0971, the same content graded 9 to 1). It sums up the papers, how Core and Extended differ, what the 12 syllabus topics cover, and how the Boom-Tutor course prepares each part.
The short answer
0620 has two tiers. Extended candidates sit Paper 2 (multiple choice, 30%) · Paper 4 (theory, 50%) · Paper 5 or 6 (practical, 20%) and can get A* to G. Core candidates sit Papers 1, 3 and 5 or 6, and the highest grade is C.
There are two series a year, June and November. All facts are from the Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 syllabus for 2026 to 2028.
The 0620 papers
Minutes per mark shows which paper is tightest: Paper 4 gives less than a minute per mark, so answering to the point has to be practised from day one.
| Paper | Tier | Time | Marks | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 multiple choice | Core | 45 min | 40 | 30% |
| Paper 2 multiple choice | Extended | 45 min | 40 | 30% |
| Paper 3 theory | Core | 1 h 15 min | 80 | 50% |
| Paper 4 theory | Extended | 1 h 15 min | 80 | 50% |
| Paper 5 practical test | Both | 1 h 15 min | 40 | 20% |
| Paper 6 Alternative to Practical | Both | 1 h | 40 | 20% |
Core or Extended: ask the school first
An A or A* needs the Extended tier. Supplement content, such as most mole calculations, is only examined on Extended papers.
The school makes the entries, so check which tier your child is entered for and whether they sit Paper 5 or Paper 6; the preparation differs. Home-school private candidates usually sit Paper 6 (no lab at home?).
