Which university faculties can IGCSE get you into? Engineering, science, business and medicine in Thailand's international programmes (2027 entry)
Short answer: IGCSE alone cannot be used to apply to a Thai university. You need Year 13 / Grade 12 or equivalent, but IGCSE is the base for what faculties look at: most look at A-Level, IB, AP or SAT results in the subjects that match the degree. This guide summarises the official admission pages (checked 24 October 2026), with a tool to see which subjects each faculty needs.
The short answer
IGCSE is a Year 11 qualification. Thai universities admit students who have finished M6 or equivalent. To show equivalence with UK-system exam results, the ทปอ. rule is at least 5 IGCSE / GCSE / O-Level subjects plus at least 3 GCE A-Level subjects (grades A* to E).
So what decides the faculty is what comes after IGCSE: Chula's international engineering school needs A-Level Physics and Chemistry at B or above · Chula's international biotechnology programme uses Maths at B or above and Biology at C or above · several medical schools need an A in A-Level Chemistry.
Choosing IGCSE subjects therefore opens or closes faculties later, because each A-Level builds on the IGCSE in the same subject.
Is IGCSE alone enough?
No. Chulalongkorn's Academic Testing Center, which issues equivalence certificates for myTCAS, sets out the ทปอ. rule for UK-system students who have not yet graduated in two forms: either at least 5 IGCSE / GCSE / O-Level subjects together with at least 3 GCE A-Level subjects at A* to E, or at least 3 Cambridge Pre-U subjects.
Students at an international school in Thailand listed in the Ministry of Education's accreditation announcement can apply with the school's own diploma, with no equivalence certificate needed.
Some faculties spell out the same idea themselves. Mahidol's international B.Sc. (SIM) asks students who sat exams from 2017 onwards for 5 O-Level / IGCSE subjects plus 3 AS / A-Level subjects, 8 in total at grade C or above.

International and Thai programmes use different scores
International programmes accept foreign results such as A-Level, IB, AP and SAT, and each sets its own subjects and grades. Most Thai-language programmes in TCAS use the ทปอ. exams (TGAT, TPAT and Thailand's own A-Level), which are sat in Thai.
Watch the name: "A-Level" in TCAS means the ทปอ. national subject exams, not the Cambridge or Edexcel GCE A-Level.
Some international programmes take both. Chula ISE has a test-score option using A-Level / IB / SAT and a TGAT / TPAT3 option as well.
Choosing IGCSE subjects without closing doors
From the requirements above: engineering uses Physics, Chemistry and Maths · biological science uses Biology and Maths · medicine uses Chemistry, Biology and Maths or Physics · business mostly uses a maths score (such as SAT Maths) and English.
If your child is not sure yet, taking Maths, Chemistry, Physics and Biology at IGCSE (Extended tier) keeps almost every faculty open. That is our advice, not a university rule: nearly every science A-Level builds on the IGCSE in the same subject.
Plan the English test (IELTS / TOEFL) early. ISE, for example, only accepts scores from within 2 years before the application date, and BBTech gives no English waiver even to graduates of English-medium schools.
Where chemistry fits
Chemistry is the subject that appears most often in science-track requirements: Chula ISE weights the science test (Physics + Chemistry) at 40% in its test-score option · medicine needs an A in A-Level Chemistry · Mahidol's international B.Sc. has a Chemical Innovation and Technology major.
A-Level Chemistry builds directly on IGCSE, especially the mole and calculations, bonding and energetics. Boom-Tutor's IGCSE Chemistry course is built on interactives that make the ideas visible, with practice in answering to the marking points. The self-learn course is ฿4,900, paid once. The platform is expected to open around December 2026.

Everything here is from each programme's official admission page and the Chulalongkorn Academic Testing Center's equivalence FAQ (which cites the 2022 criteria), checked 24 October 2026. Requirements change every year; always check the programme's latest announcement before applying.
