IGCSE Chemistry

Can IGCSE or A-Level Chemistry get you into medicine in Thailand? Requirements for 2027 entry

Short answer: IGCSE on its own cannot be used to apply to medicine in Thailand, but A-Level Chemistry (or IB HL, AP) is accepted by several programmes, mostly at grade A or above. This guide summarises each school's official admission announcement (checked 22 October 2026), with a tool to see where your child's qualification can be used.

The short answer

IGCSE is a Year 11 qualification. Every route into medicine needs Year 13 / Grade 12 or equivalent. Siriraj says outright that GED and IGCSE are not accepted, and the national equivalency rules (ทปอ.) count GCE A-Level, not IGCSE.

A-Level Chemistry is accepted at CICM, Thammasat (international) · KMITL (international) · Siriraj and Ramathibodi (Portfolio round). Siriraj, Ramathibodi and KMITL set a minimum of grade A in Chemistry (IB HL at least 6 · AP at least 4).

Chemistry is a real gate, and an A in A-Level Chemistry starts with solid IGCSE Chemistry.

Two different A-Levels: Cambridge's and Thailand's

In TCAS, "A-Level" means Thailand's own national subject exams run by ทปอ., not the Cambridge or Edexcel GCE A-Level. The กสพท announcement for TCAS70 requires 7 of these Thai A-Level exams (physics, chemistry, biology, maths 1, English, Thai, social studies) at 70%, plus TPAT1 at 30%.

So foreign results cannot replace them on the กสพท route. International students taking it sit the same Thai-language exams as everyone else (TPAT1 on 13 February 2027 · Thai A-Level on 13–15 March 2027).

Chemistry requirements by programme

Siriraj (Portfolio, 2027 entry): A-Level Chemistry ≥ A · IB HL Chemistry ≥ 6 · AP Chemistry ≥ 4 · GPAX ≥ 3.50 · Thai nationals only.

Ramathibodi (Portfolio): A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Maths or Physics all ≥ A · IB HL ≥ 6 · AP ≥ 4 · UCAT 2026 (SJT Band 1–3) required · the announcement says students from schools that teach IGCSE can apply, but must submit A-Level, IB or AP results, not IGCSE.

KMITL international MD (2026-entry rules; 2027 not yet announced): A-Level Biology, Chemistry and Physics or Maths all at A or A* · IB at least 6 · AP at least 4 · or SAT ≥ 1300 · MD@KMITL test + MMI.

CICM, Thammasat (international, 2027 entry): results in Biology, Chemistry and Maths or Physics are required, but no minimum grade is stated · selection by UCAT (2026 cycle) and an English MMI · tuition ฿475,000 per semester for Thai students.

Chulalongkorn (English-aptitude round): accepts Year 13 / Grade 12 graduates but does not use A-Level or IB grades; selection by TBAT (chemistry 25%) + CU-AAT. CU-MEDi, Chula's international MD, is graduate entry only and uses the MCAT, so IGCSE and A-Level do not apply.

Key dates (2027 entry)

Closed: Siriraj and Ramathibodi Portfolio (10 September 2026) · Chula English-aptitude round (28 September 2026) · the UCAT 2026 testing window (13 July – 24 September 2026).

Open: CICM Inter Portfolio-1 (15 October – 30 November 2026) · Not yet announced: KMITL international MD (last year's came in October–November).

For students still in Year 10–11, the thing to do now is build solid IGCSE Chemistry, the base for an A in A-Level Chemistry, and plan the UCAT and English tests at least a year ahead.

Why IGCSE Chemistry still matters

IGCSE is not on the application, but A-Level Chemistry builds directly on it: the mole and calculations, bonding, energetics, rates and equilibrium, organic chemistry. A student who leaves IGCSE still unsure about the mole meets the same idea again, harder, at AS Level.

Boom-Tutor's IGCSE Chemistry course is built on interactives that make the ideas visible, with practice in answering to the marking points. The self-learn course is ฿4,900, paid once. The platform is expected to open around December 2026.
